HOME CINE FILM TRANSFER

Super 8mm and Standard 8mm cine film.

Castlecross is one of only a small number of UK companies equipped with professional equipment to transfer all formats of cine film to DVD, digital tape or external drive for viewing or editing at home.

Digital re-mastering

At Castlecross we don’t believe there is any point in transferring your precious cine film if there is a loss of quality in any way, and preferably we’d like to improve the appearance of your pictures in the transfer process. That is why we only use equipment, software and highly experienced editors to digitally re-master and enhance the qualities of your movies, rather than simply copy the defects.

Film scanning

Castlecross transfers Standard 8mm and Super 8mm cine film to DVD, using professional frame-by-frame film scanners from the USA. The result is amazingly sharp pictures, visible from corner-to-corner with none of the usual flicker or hotspots found with less sophisticated transfer methods. Our Air Blast and liquid film cleaning process eliminates much of the surface dust caused by static, and cleverly optically masks most scratches caused by projecting the film. Finally, crystal clear digital video files are passed to dedicated broadcast quality video edit computer workstations where your DVD is made and backed up to our library for security and for future copies. Finally your title is printed in colour on the DVD body and on an insert in an attractive presentation case.

Editing

Our editors carefully view the pictures and manually remove unwanted sections and flashes as well as correcting brightness, contrast and restoring natural colours. We could cram up to two hours of movie on a DVD but that would mean lowering the quality below what we have achieved by digital re‐mastering. To maintain the best possible picture quality, we encode no more than about 90 minutes of your movie to a DVD. You will notice the difference when viewing on a modern plasma or LCD TV.

Titles
Each reel can have your own choice of title up to 30 characters long. For example: “Our Devon holiday August 1970” Please number your cine reels and make a list of your titles. If you’re not sure what is on your films you can order a Preview DVD to view your footage and decide titles. See below.

If you have several films on your DVD we can add “chapter points” at the title of each reel so that can use your DVD player remote control to select them from a personalised Hollywood style chapter selection menu.
